All-Ireland Preview: Rebuilding Ramelton Return for First Time Since 2019

One of the most successful bands in Senior Miscellaneous history will make its long-awaited return to the All-Ireland Fleadh when Ramelton Town Band competes at Titanic Slipways in Belfast.

Ramelton have not appeared at the All-Ireland since winning the Senior Miscellaneous title in 2019, making this their first appearance in the competition for seven years.

The Covid-19 pandemic interrupted the band’s participation following that success, and Ramelton have since been working to rebuild their competitive band. Their return to the All-Ireland stage is therefore a significant achievement in itself and an important step in the revival of a band with an outstanding record.

Ramelton secured their place in Belfast by winning the Senior Miscellaneous competition at the 2026 Ulster Fleadh. They will now face defending winners Banna Cheoil Cloich Cheann Fhaola in an all-Donegal contest for the title.

Although Ramelton have been absent from the All-Ireland in recent years, their reputation was built through a sustained period of performances of the highest standard of exemplary music and drill performances.

That combination helped Ramelton win eight Senior Miscellaneous All-Ireland titles, placing them among the most successful bands in the history of the section.

Their first senior victory came in 2009, and they immediately retained the title in 2010. After finishing second in 2011, Ramelton began an extraordinary sequence by winning five consecutive All-Irelands from 2012 to 2016.

They later returned to the top in 2019, defeating Cloughaneely to claim their eighth senior title in what proved to be their final All-Ireland appearance before this year.

Their earlier years which demonstrated the strength and consistency that Ramelton could produce. Between 2008 and 2019, the band finished either first or second on every occasion on which it appeared at the All-Ireland, winning eight titles and recording four runner-up finishes during that period.

Their run of five consecutive senior titles from 2012 to 2016 remains one of the great periods of dominance in the section.

This year’s return comes under very different circumstances. Rather than arriving after an uninterrupted run of competition, Ramelton are rebuilding and returning to the All-Ireland stage for the first time since their 2019 success.

They will need to be at their very best against Cloughaneely, whose senior band has won three of the last five All-Irelands.

Ramelton, however, possess a proud competitive tradition of their own. Their disciplined marching, musical depth and ability to create a full, balanced sound have been central to each of their previous successes.

Winning a ninth Senior Miscellaneous title would be a remarkable achievement after seven years away. Regardless of the final result, Ramelton’s return represents an important moment for the band and adds another fascinating chapter to its rivalry with Cloughaneely.
