Mullaghduff Senior Fife and Drum Band made a strong return to the Fleadh this weekend, winning the Senior Flute category at the Donegal Fleadh — their first county title since 2017. It marks a significant step for the band, which had taken a break from competition in recent years following a long period of success.

Their last All-Ireland win came in 2014, concluding an unprecedented nine-year winning streak (2006–2014) that remains a record in the category. Since then, Maghery Fife and Drum Band has emerged as the dominant force, securing eight consecutive All-Ireland titles from 2015 to 2024. This year, Maghery is aiming to match Mullaghduff’s historic run — setting the stage for a compelling rivalry if both bands compete in the All Ireland.

One of the most notable aspects of Mullaghduff’s performance at the Donegal Fleadh was the presence of a number of very young members in the senior lineup. Their confident showing suggests that the tradition is in safe hands, with the next generation stepping up to carry the legacy forward.

While the band performed well, they acknowledge that a major challenge lies ahead if they are to progress to the All-Ireland Fleadh in Wexford. First, they must qualify at the Ulster Fleadh in Warrenpoint on July 27th — a key milestone in their competitive season.

As the summer unfolds, all eyes will be on whether Mullaghduff can build on this early success and challenge Maghery’s current dominance. Either way, their return is a welcome boost to the Senior Fife and Drum scene, and a sign that the band’s proud tradition continues to thrive.
