CHARLOTTE Catholic High School, North Carolina, USA have been named as the overall winners of the 49th Limerick International Band Championship \u2013 Ireland\u2019s only marching band competition.<\/p>\n

Thousands of spectators braved the rain and wind in Limerick City as they cheered and supported the 1,300 musicians from 20 bands who took part in this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n

Bands from the United States, Estonia, England, Northern Ireland, Limerick and across Ireland marched down O\u2019Connell Street in Limerick as part of the Limerick St P\"Screenshotatrick\u2019s Festival 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr James Collins said, \u201cThere was high energy and high entertainment.  The people of Limerick came out to support it again despite the weather.  The rain didn\u2019t stop anybody having fun, it was fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a great event for Limerick.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The band was presented with the Kenneally Jewellers Perpetual Trophy as overall winners of the championship.<\/p>\n\n

The winners in the other categories were:<\/span><\/p>\n

Best International Band \u2013 Slippery Rock University Marching Pride Band, Pennsylvania<\/div>\n
Best Youth Band \u2013 Banna Chluain Meala, Clonmel<\/div>\n
Best Local Band \u2013 Newcastle West Pipe Band<\/div>\n
Best Musical Performance \u2013 The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, New Jersey<\/div>\n
Best Uniform \u2013 Mullingar Town Band<\/div>\n
Most Entertaining Performance \u2013 Clondalkin Youth Band<\/div>\n
Special Judges\u2019 Award (Pipe Band) \u2013 Killorglin and District Pipe Band<\/div>\n
Special Judges\u2019 Award \u2013 Friendship Band, Northern Ireland<\/div>\n
Special Judges\u2019 Award \u2013 Glen Ridge High School, New Jersey<\/div>\n

Bands performed at the reviewing stand for three minutes as part of the judging process with the winners announced at Arthur\u2019s Quay Park following the competition.<\/p>\n

Performances at the 49th Limerick International Band Championship were judged by an international panel consisting of: Prof Stan Michalski, Cindy Scheid, Dr James Standland, Evelyn Grant and Niall Carroll.<\/p>\n

The head judge, Prof Michalski said, \u201cIt was outstanding due to the weather to see all the musicians so enthused.  We were very much impressed.  It would have been especially difficult for those playing the woodwind instruments.  The musicians playing the brass instruments would get away with it.  We had snow last year, rain this year \u2013 next year it\u2019s going to be sunshine!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to congratulate all the bands for taking the opportunity to walk through the entire parade, because it was very difficult on the instrumentalists with the weather being so wet.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jonathan Helmick, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of music and director of bands, said winning the awards was a surprise, but the students earned that honor through their hard work.<\/p>\n

\u201c(Winning these awards) really says something about the caliber of what is going on, not only in our program, but throughout the University,\u201d Helmick said. \u201cMagic can happen and for us, it happened live in front of a half-million people.\u201d<\/p>\n
