Belfast City Council is preparing a bid to host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann for a third consecutive year in 2028, with Cork and Ballina also interested in bringing the festival to their respective areas.

""

The move comes after Belfast’s successful debut as host in August 2026, with the city already confirmed to stage the event again in 2027. However, recent disorder and uncertainty surrounding cooperation with loyalists have raised questions about the arrangements for future festivals, potentially affecting the 2027 event before the race for 2028 even begins.

According to reports, Belfast City Council is considering a third consecutive hosting following discussions among elected representatives, building on the visitor numbers and international attention generated by this year’s festival.

Belfast welcomed large crowds for its first Fleadh in August, with the event bringing traditional Irish music, song and dance to venues across the city.

The participation of bands from different musical and community backgrounds was an important feature of the programme. However, the decision not to stage an official marching band parade prompted questions about the planning process, with a subsequent Freedom of Information response from Belfast City Council indicating that it held no records explaining why the parade did not take place.

Recent tensions surrounding parading and cooperation between loyalist bands and authorities have added another layer of uncertainty. While it remains unclear what effect these developments will have on the Fleadh, they could have implications for the 2027 festival, never mind a potential third year in 2028.

Belfast’s ambition to host again will therefore come alongside questions about how the event can build on this year’s success while resolving outstanding issues around parade arrangements and participation.

Ballina hopes to bring Fleadh back to Mayo

""

Ballina, County Mayo, is campaigning to host the festival in 2028, which would mark 30 years since the town last staged the Fleadh in 1997 and 1998.

The campaign has received backing from local representatives and businesses, with supporters highlighting the area’s strong traditional music heritage and the potential economic benefits of hosting one of Ireland’s largest cultural events.

Estimates associated with the campaign suggest the festival could generate around €60 million for the local economy. However, staging the event would require substantial investment, with previous estimates putting the cost at approximately €1.9 million.

Campaigners have highlighted the importance of support from Mayo County Council, the Government and local businesses, alongside the need to provide accommodation, transport, security and suitable venues for the expected influx of visitors.

A successful bid would provide an opportunity to bring the Fleadh back to a town with a longstanding connection to the event, while spreading the economic benefits throughout the wider region.

Cork also exploring a bid

Cork is another potential contender, with Cork City Council examining the feasibility of hosting the festival and the possibility of working alongside Cork County Council on a joint proposal.

Supporters have pointed to Cork’s cultural offering, transport connections and capacity to accommodate a major event. Economic projections associated with the proposal suggest that hosting could generate more than €100 million for the regional economy.

However, the financial commitment required remains a significant consideration. Council officials have raised concerns about the cost of staging the festival and the extent to which the expenditure could be justified from the local authority’s perspective.

The councils would need to establish how the event could be funded and organised before progressing a formal bid.

Decision on 2028 still to come

With Belfast seeking to build on its first two years as host, Ballina hoping to bring the festival back to Mayo and Cork exploring a joint approach, the selection process for 2028 could attract considerable interest.

Belfast’s experience of hosting the event gives it a strong foundation, but the outstanding questions surrounding the 2026 marching band parade and uncertainty over future cooperation underline the importance of resolving practical issues ahead of the next festival.

For now, Belfast remains confirmed for 2027, while the host location for 2028 has yet to be decided. Whether the city can secure a third consecutive year will depend on the formal selection process and its plans for delivering the event in the years ahead.
