Today is the first article in our new series of <\/a>Band Tips,<\/a> every Wednesday we will be posting a new article of Band Tips to give you tips on all positions of the band and to help you run your band. <\/p>\n\n\n

The first two weeks are all about Drum Majors. So firstly a drum major<\/strong> or field commander is the leader of a marching band<\/strong>, drum<\/strong> and bugle corps, or pipe band<\/strong>, usually positioned at the head of the band<\/strong> or corps. The drum major<\/strong> often holds the responsibility<\/strong> to keep the band<\/strong> organised and structured. Heres 7 thing you should be doing;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1 A good Drum Major is early<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Teen<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As much as I hate being late, I don\u2019t even like just being \u201con time.\u201d If I\u2019m exactly on time to an event, a class, a rehearsal, I feel like I\u2019ve lost an opportunity to take a breath, to get my bearings, to get my head in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olympic divers don\u2019t just run up the ladder and fling themselves off the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They pause, breathe, center themselves\u2014they look to make sure there\u2019s water in the pool\u2014all of which helps them lessen the possibility of things going badly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Lets<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

When you arrive somewhere early, you give yourself the time to prepare one last time, and the chance not to seem flustered right out of the gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You never get a second chance at a first impression. A good drum major tries to be early whever possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2 A good Drum Major is supportive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Teamwork:<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Show support for others <\/strong><\/em>before they show support for you.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll score points with our bands (in fact, with anyone) when we make the effort to take care of them, to listen to them, to thank them for their work, to treat them kindly, without their having asked for such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But more than \u201cscoring points,\u201d this is really about creating a positive atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be hard sometimes, because people don\u2019t always agree on everything all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if we\u2019re supportive of others, consistently, in a sustained way \u2013 without maintaining a mental scoreboard, but just because it\u2019s a constructive way to operate \u2013 the someone<\/em> will benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who benefits?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It may be the whole band, because they appreciate the support and finally grasp why we were being such smiling, helpful people all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"You'll<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Or at the very least, YOU may feel better, because whether things work out or they don\u2019t, you know we\u2019ve done everything you can do to build people up rather than breaking them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good drum major works to create a positive environment. Speaking of being positive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3 A good Drum Major is enthusiastic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Enthusiasm:<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you love what you\u2019re doing\u2014whether you like it or not.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we\u2019re on that subject \u2013 look alive! Stay awake! Be alert! Be on<\/strong><\/em>\u2014all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one is like that 24\/7. No one. But we\u2019ve got to keep our down<\/em> moments\u2014our exhaustion, our dismay, and our bad moods\u2014tucked away in places and times where our bands can\u2019t see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drum majors are always \u201con stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not feeling it? Fake it.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the leader of any group is operating at 100%, that group will probably reflect that energy back at about 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the laws of intergalactic band math, if you want your group to be at the absolute top of their game, you have to be at 143%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s put it another way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can fake energy, but not passion.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just about everyone has a \u201cBS-meter.\u201d It\u2019s how you can tell when someone\u2019s being straight with you or if they\u2019re joking or lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re not putting everything you have into your job while you\u2019re in front of our bands, THEY\u2019LL KNOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Entusiasm!<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But, consider this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you get into band in the first place? Why did you stay in? Why do you still keep at it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chances are pretty good that you looked forward to becoming drum major because you just LOVE the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s all it takes. A good drum major shows their love for the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4 A good Drum Major is an example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Military<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You are a leader. Act like it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can we get people to love band if we don\u2019t appear to love band? How can we expect people to behave responsibly if we\u2019re not willing to?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do we want our bands to be enthusiastic? To listen to the director well? To put everything they have into everything they do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we simply CAN\u2019T NOT do those things. And, as we said in #3, at least 43% more than the rest of the band!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Doctor<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

How do you wish your band would be?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve said it in lots of different ways, but it really is<\/em> about being the first one to hit the field and the last one to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s about doing what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether you like it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And lots of times, it\u2019s about figuring out what needs to be done before anyone has to tell you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good drum major thinks ahead. Speaking of which:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 A good Drum Major is prepared<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you fail to plan, plan to fail.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be ready. Study the scores. Practice conducting the scores. Know the instrument part cold, if you\u2019re one of those DMs who marches and plays a tune or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study the drill pages. Look for the challenging drill moves that may need extra effort to teach or clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expect the unexpected\u2026ahead of time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Imagine things that the director MIGHT ask for ( \u201ccan you work with the percussion?\u201d \u201ccan you teach this new member to march in about five minutes?\u201d) and figure out ways to do them in a way that people wouldn\u2019t guess that the whole thing was improvised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine what emergency might happen during a parade, pregame, or competition and you`d be the one to figure out what you could do to make your band feel like there\u2019s someone competent and caring getting them through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good drum major does their homework. Speaking of which:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#6 A good Drum Major is professional<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Professional<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re still a kid. It\u2019s ok to act like one. Just not during band time.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, if we\u2019re wearing band swag or anything that links us to our organizations, we need to consider how professional we may need to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other people don\u2019t care that it\u2019s not \u201cband time.\u201d You represent your band, even when you\u2019re not officially on the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should the audience say about your band?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

So, in or out of rehearsal, in or out of uniform, let\u2019s be classy. Let\u2019s be dignified. Let\u2019s be positive. Let\u2019s show good judgment and taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s avoid letting our personal lives interfere with the jobs we need to do. Let\u2019s use tact\u2014\u201dthe art of making a point without making an enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Treat<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s praise in public and critique in private, and even then, be decent about it. And even though drum majors get attention almost constantly, let\u2019s be sure we\u2019re getting it for the right reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s remember that we\u2019re always on stage and always being evaluated on how well we help our bands, rather than how good we look in our uniforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good drum major acts the part all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#7 A good Drum Major is a servant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Helping<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Leaders serve.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is something that people who have held elected office throughout our history have occasionally forgotten: they\u2019re in public service<\/strong> for a reason. They\u2019re serving the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, it\u2019s not a title we imagine announcing from the press box: \u201cBand servant Juan Smith, is your band ready?\u201d \u201cThe color guard is served by Bess Mason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that\u2019s probably how our brains should translate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s so much more than conducting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A drum major is a role model, a friend, a mediator, a teacher, a protector. Part of our job is to make sure that the scared freshman doesn\u2019t quit before the end of band camp. Part of it is to make sure the upperclass marchers help us to keep the band moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Helpful<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And part of our job is to lead people in ways that don\u2019t look like standing-on-the-podium, commanding-the-block, deep-bows-at-the-end-of-the-tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, DMs do those things too. But that\u2019s the easy stuff. Serving<\/em> is much more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good drum major puts the needs of the group before their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
