The Holy Cross Accordion Band Atticall travelled down to the in Cavan on friday and stayed down to Monday. The competition was held on Sunday behind Breffni Park.
The Senior Accordion competition was the last of the day and although there were only two competitors it was an enthralling competition. The two bands, Atticall and St Brigids Accordion Band Jonesborough have had a fierce rivalry through the years, this year being the first time Atticall have been able beat them in several UMBA competitions. However two weeks ago Joneborough won their first competition of the season beating Atticall in the UMBA Marching Final. This is what made this particular competition so interesting would Atticall be able to beat Jonesborough in the All Ireland for the first time or would Jonesborough continue their dominance in this competition.
There was a tense wait for the results but ultimately the best band on the day prevailed. Atticall Band had continued from their success of last year by retaining the All Ireland title for only the second time in the band’s history. The results were followed by a large parade through Cavan town including 5 minute stop at the gig rig per band. The Atticall band received a huge homecoming with all the supporters and family members welcoming home the All Ireland Champions!
