Maintaining Uniforms and Equipment
Proper maintenance of uniforms and instruments ensures that a marching band looks professional and functions smoothly. Uniforms should be cleaned and pressed after each performance, with special care given to delicate trims, buttons and plumes. Many bands assign a quartermaster or uniform committee to manage sizing, repairs and inventory. Shoes and boots also need regular polishing and replacement of worn soles to keep performers comfortable and safe on parade routes.
Instruments require ongoing care to keep them in playing condition. Brass instruments need valves oiled and slides greased, while woodwinds should be swabbed, reed stocks checked and key mechanisms adjusted periodically. Percussion heads must be tuned and replaced when worn, and straps inspected for wear. Keeping spare parts and repair kits on hand prevents minor issues from disrupting rehearsals or performances. Teaching band members basic maintenance fosters responsibility and prolongs the life of the equipment.
